Q: You and your family ditched your builder-grade home and downsized to a bungalow in 2014. Is that when your DIY journey began, or have you always had a passion for DIY and design?

A: I’ve had a passion for design since I was a little girl moving around the world with my military parents. I was always rearranging my room and took every move as an opportunity to experiment and try something new.

Q: You describe your design style as eclectic with a distinct global influence. How does color help tell this story in your home?

A: Color is the foundation of my style! I’m so inspired by all the colors of the world and I want to immerse myself in it when I’m at home as well. I love to travel and I love to take color cues from the places I’ve been, or am inspired by, and incorporate them into my home.

Q: You are fearless in the face of moody hues. What would you say to a fellow DIYer who was hesitating to take the plunge into the dramatic color pool?

A: Just go for it!  Life is too short to live in uninspired spaces. I definitely recommend starting with paint.  It’s easy, inexpensive and instant. Also, it’s just paint, so if you don’t love it, just paint it back or try again!  It’s the most commitment-free way to dive into color. Once you feel more confident and/or discover what you love, you can move on to things like furniture pieces or wallpaper.

Q: How would you finish this sentence – “No room is complete without…” ?

A: Something black! And also something unexpected.

Q: We have to know, what is your favorite Sherwin-Williams color (or two!)? Have you used it in your home?

A: Tricorn Black. This is a super popular, gorgeous black, and for good reasons. You literally can’t go wrong using it – from interior to exterior. I’ve used it for my son’s bedroom makeover and the pergola on our patio.

  5. These very dark colors, especially dark green are very depressing and ugly. The same with the grey colors that are not even in anymore.
