Grayed Out?

It’s no surprise that the go-to neutral for the last decade has been gray, but we’re starting to see the trend shift from cool to warm as another neutral is making its way back into our homes – we’re looking at you, beige!

Light Gray Dining room

Back to Beige

When beige entered the scene as the neutral of the early 2000s, we saw all-beige everywhere. From the walls to the furniture, monochromatic color schemes were dominating our homes. How will beige get a new look in 2020? This warm neutral won’t be a direct pickup of where it left off. We’re starting to see it paired with color! Muted jewel tones and bold earth tones help keep the 2020 revival of beige feeling far from dated. True shades of beige like Shiitake and Accessible Beige are the perfect blend of warm and cool so you’re able to keep your space feeling fresh and full of color

Going Greige

Greige mixes a little gray with a little beige to create a hybrid color that bridges the best of both neutrals. This hue can take on a variety of different tones that range from warm to cool and somewhere in between. No matter the ratio, this transitional shade is the perfect way to update an all-gray color palette.

Ready to find your shade of greige? We’ve got a handful of options to put you ahead of the color trend. Perfect Greige features a medium tone that balances equal parts of gray’s coolness with beige’s warmth for a temperature-balanced color. If you’re leaning toward a warmer space, Windsor Greige and Mega Greige have undertones of yellow and brown that play into the warmth of beige. In the epic battle between gray and beige, remember you can always go greige.

  1. I bought 5 gallons of Perfect Greige. Only painted 1/2 the house and glad I did. This is a very odd color in the walls. More beige than grey reflected in the color. It is very dark also. Will be in to purchase something lighter. It is a great paint to work with and smooth on the walls.

Hi Linda! Perfect Greige is indeed dark and can look beige in certain lighting. The list below is of similar colors, but with a decided gray hue to them. Take a look at:
      Roycroft Mist Gray SW 28544
      Skyline Steel SW 1015
      Modern Gray SW 7632

  2. We are halfway finished painting our entire downstairs with Loggia. It is AMAZING. I’m sad that it didn’t make your greige list. It is so versatile and shifts in tone from AM to PM.

Our house is very open concept with a two story foyer. We are adding shiitake on the stairs and upper hallway, and moths wing to our fireplace surround as an accent.

Hi Tina! Loggia SW 7506 is still a popular neutral similar to Balanced Beige SW 7037. Good luck with the rest of your project. We would love to see how it turns out. 3. What is the difference between greige and taupe?

    Barbara Leonard
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Barbara! Greiges are a gray with a beige undertone. Taupes are beiges with a pink undertone. A lot of taupes can turn pink or purple in certain lighting.

  4. What about the color China Doll? Or is that a local builder color here in my area? Sherwin Williams here knows it well here. It’s a great neutral. Which of the above colors is closest to that? What else was on the color strip with China Doll?

  7. Dear SW-
Is there a greige Offered that has a warm/green undertone, with a value/depth similar to
    SW’s Perfect Greige color?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Robin! Grays can be tricky. They can only be made by combining color families. There are basically three families of gray: blue-gray, green-gray and griege. Here are some green-grays similar to Perfect Greige:
      Comfort Gray SW 6205
      Rare Gray SW 6199
      Escape Gray SW 6185

  8. I just painted my upstairs hallway and stair Gossamer Veil, I have been contemplating what do do with the main floor. I wanted a neutral, but no more gray, so your article was helpful in suggesting a beige or greige, thank you! What is your top recommendations, coming down a hall and into an open area following the Gossamer Veil? This way I can go pick up the sample at our local store and see what works! Thank you. Tammy

Hi Tammy- Consider the following greiges to flow from your Gossamer Veil. You will have to go a little darker in order to differentiate for that “pop” of color. Take a look at:

  11. I have accessible beige in the majority of my home. It’s my go to come for our rental homes as well : ) I love it but would like one shade lighter for one of my rooms. There isn’t a shade lighter on the color strip so could recommend others that have the same undertone but are lighter in value? Thank you!

  12. I’ve painted my entire home in Moderate White 6140. Absolutely love this color in smaller spaces like my bedrooms. The larger where there is more light makes the walls appear a bit creamier which is still nice but unexpected. I’m desperately trying to find a clean neutral color to now paint my kitchen cabinets to blend with the moderate white walls. Any suggestions would be fantastic!!!

  15. Hi,

I’m looking for a lighter paint color for windowless basement rooms that will go with the Mohawk Luxurious Model 511 Marsh Grass color carpet I selected. Unfortunately, in my basement lighting, the carpet looks like a taupe/mushroom color with pinkish rather than green or yellow undertones. I’m finding it difficult to find a paint complimentary to go with this taupe carpet. Any suggestions?

Hi Melanie! We think these soft neutrals would look great:

  18. We painted our great room a brownish, darker shade of “greige” nearly 10 years ago. To this day I still love it, despite it losing it’s trendiness especially in the last 5 or so years of everything grey. I knew it would come back! It’s a subtle yet dramatic color, but also very calming and welcoming. And it’s easy to pair with other colors.

  19. I’ve painted my walls in the kitchen, dining room & living room Kilim beige. I’m thinking I’d like to paint my kitchen cabinets a some type medium blue. I’ve tried Navel blue but it’s too dark for the room. I have stainless steel appliances. I’ll be getting a new floor, countertop & back splash. Any suggestions on what blues to consider?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Tracey! We love Naval, but it may be too dark for uppers and lowers. Would you consider doing just Naval on the lower cabinets and then Extra White SW 7006 on the upper cabinets? If Naval is still too dark, take a look at:
      Bracing Blue SW 6242
      Stardew SW 9138
      Aleutian SW 6241

  20. We moved to an apartment last fall due to health issues, we ar both retired. The walls are all a nice vanilla/beige color. We are allowed to paint however the color must be light enough to be covered with their vanilla color if/when we move in order to get our deposit which is hefty. I like citrine but don’t know if it would go with my furnishings. I have a mustard/cream teeny check couch, black and cream open wood chair, tan leather chair, and blue/cream rugs. The LR and Dining area are connected and open. What color wall paint would go with this combination? I am a frustrated designer and can’t just “go with it”. Thanks much. PS We have always used Sherwin Williams paint, it’s great, but more than that we luv, luv your commercials. They are so fun!!!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Dusty! The Citrine may clash with the mustard in your couch upholstery. Consider a warm neutral that would complement all of the colors in your furniture. Take a look at:
      Natural Linen SW 9109
      Whole Wheat SW 6121
      Relaxed Khaki SW 6149

  21. Can you please tell me the undertones in Modern Gray, Accessible Beige, Worldly Gray and Realist Beige? Looking for a greige with an LRV between 55-62 for an open concept with northern exposure with beige countertops, carpet and warm/dark wood floors.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Tess! Modern Gray & Worldly Gray are both greiges which means they are greys with a beige undertone. Modern Gray has an LRV of 62 and Worldly Gray has an LRV of 57, so both of these colors would work for you. The LRV is listed for every color on our website. Accessible & Realist Beige are beiges with a brown undertone and have no gray in them.

      Sherwin-Williams
  22. I read in some blog that Accessible Beige is the most neutral of Greiges – no undertones – and so glad i found out about that wonderful color. Ready for a new house and no, not greyed out at all. We live in the area where colors are outside, so adding more to the house leads to some visual allergy :). Need to find out what color i was advised to paint the front porch of our house, a VERY helpful associate in the store picked it for the same reason – no or almost no undertones. Sth like ‘perfect grey’ or ‘ real grey’ ..

  23. The focus in our living room is a painting we have with vibrant colors. We currently have outdated furniture that goes with the painting but looking to recover or replace. I would like to have a virtual consultation to discuss options on wall colors. Please advise what is needed.

  24. Hi,
Our trim and doors are Kilim Beige. We are looking for new color to pair with it. This color would be the primary color for the interior of our house. We currently have it paired with Dapper Tan but would like something lighter but still warm. Thanks!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Mitch, some lighter versions that would work on your interior are:
      Malabar SW 9110
      Bittersweet Stem SW 7536
      Macadamia SW 6142

      Sherwin-Williams
  25. Great post! I tried Accessible Beige in my home and it has a purple cast in the majority of the area. Do you think Shiitake would be better? What can I expect from Shiitake vs. Accessible Beige? I am having trouble distinguishing the two from just the small paint chip.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Rachel! You may want to first try switching out your lightbulbs to a clear/led option. Your current bulbs may have some blue in them which is why this color looks purple. As far as Shitake vs Accessible Beige, Shitake is a little darker and has a subtle khaki undertone. Shitake will read as a neutral tan while Accessible Beige will read as a neutral greige in most lighting.

      Sherwin-Williams
      • Thank you for the response! That’s really helpful. I see the purple tint more in natural light than I do when I turn our overhead lighting on. I am thinking Shiitake being more tan and less greige than Accessible Beige may be just what I need in order to eliminate the slightly taupe look I am wanting to avoid.

  26. We are doing a whole house remodel. Open floor plan with very high ceilings. Going with Pure white trim. Lots of sunlight as the great room is east facing. Thinking of Agreeable Gray for whole house but having a problem with color for walls in kitchen and bath as cabinets have been painted Acier which I love. Kitchen has granite countertop (white, gray, black, taupe) with white subway tile backsplash. All appliances are black. Baths have very little light and have white/ gray blue cultured marble countertops and showers . Was thinking Sea Salt for baths but I see an undertone of green.

  27. I used Alabaster for on of my bedrooms but was thinking it would be more of an off white. It doesn’t look much different than your trim white paint that I purchased for my trim in that room. Is Alabaster used alot when you have white trim? Should I not have purchased SW trim paint and actually went with a specific color for the trim?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Gayle! Extra White SW 7006 is our cleanest, crispest white. Alabaster SW 7008 has a subtle grey undertone which should differentiate it from Extra White. You have two options, the first and easiest option is to switch your light bulbs out for Clear and/or LED bulbs. There may be some blue in your bulbs which will alter how the color looks. The second option would be for you to darken your Alabaster. The store can make that shade darker for you; however, at that point you will be making a custom color so there is no prediction as to how the final color will look. A darker version of Alabaster would make your trim “pop”.

  28. Last year I wanted to paint the exterior of my home, but felt very limited by the roof shingle color, which has a slightly reddish undertone. I went with Perfect Greige, and made the bold choice of Loyal Blue for the shutters and front door, with a little Bright White Trim. I’m delighted with how it all came together. I’ll always be a fan of Sherwin-Williams for every paint project!

  30. Hello,

We are currently building a house right on the river. The house is open concept( kitchen, dining room and living room). We are thinking about painting that huge room Passive Gray and the hallway downstairs and upstairs, Alabaster. We are choosing passive gray, because it connects with the river, and alabaster to give it that contrast. The trim will be white…. I would love to learn your thoughts…our contractor is using Sherwin Williams paint. thank you in advance

    Rose Cardona
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Rose! It sounds like you will have a beautiful place when you are done. Alabaster SW 7008 may be too light and will get lost against the white trim. Consider using a color in the same family, but just a little darker – not dark mind you, but darker than Alabaster. Look at:

      Windfresh White SW 7628
      White Heron SW 7627
      Aesthetic White SW 7035

  31. Hi, I’m having a difficult time choosing the right color for my kitchen, great room & sunroom which I intend to paint all the same color. I face the west & get a lot of sunlight. I have oak cabinets & woodwork. Great room & sunroom are very open. Kitchen is separated by a wall but have a large opening. Undecided about accessible beige, shiitake, loggia. Don’t want something too beige or something too dark. Also I read I should’ve chose something with green undertones. What LVR ? Should I go with a warm color or cool color? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks so much!

  32. We just moved into a new home and painted the entire downstairs and upstairs hallway in Agreeable Gray. It is an open floor plan with a two story foyer/upstairs hallway… so I like my paint to be one color. We have a northern facing house and it’s reading too cool, sometimes purple in our southern facing family room. We used accessible beige in our last house and I loved it, but I wanted something with a tad more greige in it. Any suggestions?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Mer! Agreeable Gray SW 7029 is a greige, it is a very light greige. You may want to try one shade darker which is Anew Gray SW 7030. If that looks too dark for you, look at Worldly Gray SW 7043. Before you repaint though, you may want to switch out your lightbulbs. In the room where the color looks too cool, put in a clear LED bulb, the clear light will remove any undertones and give a crisp reading of the color.

  33. Hello,

Our entire house is painted in flat Loggia. I’m looking for a good color for my kitchen. We have hickory cabinets that lean toward yellow, dark gray slate floors and black slate countertops with swirls of silver green and light tan in them. It’s the classic country kitchen from the early 2000’s. I thought about just going lighter with Shitake, but I would love to have a little bit of color or contrast. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  34. Hello,

I am going to repaint my condo in Pacer White.. Is this a good beige color without yellow undertones. Also what would be a good trim color?
    Thanks! Lisa

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Lisa, Yes to your first question. In fact, that is the perfect way to describe Pacer White – soft beige without yellow undertones. Since this is a soft color, we suggest you use a crisp, clean white on the trim. Either of the two whites below would complement Pacer and let the wall color “pop” at the same time. Take a look at:
      Extra White SW 7006
      Pure White SW 7005

  35. I am planning on having my cabinets painted Shiitake. I have American Cherry floors and all of my trim work is BM Alpine White. I really don’t want to repaint the trim so I am hoping this will be a good match. If not what what would you recommend?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Sharon, there is a subtle touch of yellow in your trim and Shitake may have too much brown to work well with it. We think the following neutrals, which have a subtle touch of green, would be a better complement to both your trim and cherry flooring. Look at:
      Naturel SW 7542
      Relaxed Khaki SW 6149
      Avenue Tan SW 7543

  36. I just painted our new kitchen/dining/family room area in China Doll. The kitchen cabinets are supposed to be painted in Crisp Linen. The knotty pine tongue & groove ceiling I whitewashed in White Flour. The problem is we just put in 3000k LED lighting & my beautiful tan walls look light green against that gorgeous wood ceiling. Please help. I just want a true light tan on the walls and a cream color for the cabinets. The ceiling is perfect the way it is. The wall color looks great in natural light & is exactly what I wanted but when it gets dark out & the lights are on, I have light green. The look is a warm, farmhouse kitchen. Could you tell me what color I should repaint the walls & what color the kitchen cabinets should be?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Cindy! We are sorry to hear about your color turning green. We have some options for you that will look tan but still give you the warm farmhouse vibe you want. We would like you to consider painting your cabinets the White Flour of your ceiling but at full strength. We have listed some creamy colors for you below, but fear that it may look like you tried to match your ceiling and failed. If you repeat White Flour, at full strength and opacity, you will be creating an intentional and cohesive palette.
      Take a look at:

  37. We are remodeling and have painted Alabaster on the cabinets and woodwork. We are painting Accessible Beige on the walls. The floors are a grey-brown wood laminate. What would be a good color to paint the doors going to the outside and garage. Other interior doors are Alabaster.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Millie, Stick with Alabaster SW 7008 on your garage door. In order to create a cohesive palette, you want all your trim/door color to be the same. Alabaster is a great background color and will make any wall color “pop”. Keep the doors in the background and let your eye focus on other details in your space.

  39. Kilim beige is on the ceiling from 15 years ago and I would like to not have to repaint. What would work best on walls now, Accessible beige or Agreeable Gray? Wanting a light color, as we put in dark floors (used to have light tile and darker walls). Our trim and doors are Alabster.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Stacey, Agreeable Gray looks blah and Accessible Beige is too close to Kilim to work. It would look like you tried to match the ceiling and failed. Are you open to doing a color on your wall? Perhaps a light blue or green? Do you have any of those colors in your upholstery or accessories?

      Sherwin-Williams
      • Yes, I am open to doing a little hint of color. It is just a lot of wall to cover, as it is an open floor plan-den, kitchen, dining, living, and halls. All furnishings are neutral (either leather or wood) so could pull in color with accessories.

  40. I’m trying to decide between Shiitake and Loggia for our great room. I bought samplize pieces, have them up and I swear they look the same! Does one have more grey in it? Our room is not small (21×17) and we have a big triple window. My furniture colors are indigo blue/grey. My kitchen is Stone Lion but I don’t need to have that in the great room. I also have Shiitake in my entry way. Thanks!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Julie, you are correct! Shiitake and Loggie are very similar. Loggia is just a little darker – neither one will read as gray. If you want to make the kitchen part of your great room, consider using Stone Lion in your great room. If you want to keep the kitchen separate, consider painting your great room Shiitake and if you are open to it, paint your entry way Stone Lion. This way you will have the darker shade on either side of Shiitake – like a virtual hug.

  41. I have Moderate White trim throughout my house with an open floor plan, high ceilings, east facing large windows, warm travertine floors and dark brown stained cabinetry. I currently have Nantucket Dune on the walls, but want to lighten them. I love the look of “white” walls, but am having a difficult time coordinating to the Moderate White trim due to its undertone and saturation. Would Moderate White work on the walls, or is there another color you would suggest to work with my current trim color? Thanks!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Lise, Moderate White SW 6141 will work on the walls if you use a flat or matte sheen. We assume your trim is in a semi-gloss sheen, so altering the sheen alone can really make a difference.

  42. I am looking to paint the interior of my house a cool tan/gray color. I do not want it to dark nor do I want to see any pink/mauve or purple undertones. I want you to see grays and tans. A more neutral color but not a warm milky color.

  43. We are updating the paint in our house and I am “going crazy” trying to decide which color to choose. We want a light /medium neutral. Our living room has lots of windows, beige carpet, dark leather sofas, navy chairs, dark tables. We painted all the trim in our house and kitchen cabinets in Dover White several years ago. I like Dover White but am finding it is hard to get a neutral to go with it. I had decided on Accessible Beige but read that is not a good choice with Dover trim. Any suggestions?

    Carolyn Wainscott
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Carolyn, we can completely understand your dilemma. Dover White SW 6385 has a noticeable yellow undertone to it and Accessible Beige SW 7036 has a noticeable brown undertone to it – and yellow and brown do not look good together. Instead, consider using a neutral with a subtle golden undertone like Buckram Binding SW 0036 or Stucco SW 7569. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you!

  44. We are thinking of painting our kitchen walls Shiitake. Our cabinets are Navaho white but look yellow which I hate. My countertops River White granite. I have a lot of cabinets and trim. What color white would look best on my cabinets and trim if we go with Shiitake on the walls?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Susan, well you are correct, Navajo White has a lot of yellow in it and would not complement your wall color, Shitake. Instead, consider using a clean soft white like Pure White SW 7005 or Greek Villa SW 7551. Order some chips of these colors to see if they will work for you. Let us know if you need anything else, thank you!

  45. I’m starting to worry that Shiitake is too dark for my great room. The room can be a little dark. It is next to my kitchen which is Stone Lion. If I want to go lighter than Shiitake would you recommend Accessible Beige? I definitely do not want white. Thanks!

  46. Kilim Beige was introduced to me when we moved into our house 7 years ago. It looks good in our great room. I’d like to paint our upper kitchen cabinets an off white color and the island a blue/green. Is there a greige/off white that would work? Ideas?

    Linda Manske
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Linda, we love the palette for your kitchen! Is Kilim Beige is on lower cabinets with blue/green on your island? Consider using either Ivory Lace SW 7013 or Heron SW 7627. These colors fall into the greige/off white category you wanted and would work with both colors on your cabinetry.

  47. I painted my living room Shiitake. It has East and North windows. I have dark wood stained floors and trim. I wanted it to go with my area rug that has warm grays, blues, gold, orange in it. Shiitake is showing pink undertones which doesn’t seem to go well. Instead of repainting, I was looking for a suggestion for a color to paint the adjoining dining room that would tone down the pink of the shiitake in the living room.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Kathy, take a look at either Neutral Ground SW 7568 or Natural Choice SW 7011. Either of these neutrals will tone down the pink on the wall. Let us know if you need anything else!

  48. Started painting the upstairs, working my way down. So far the master bedroom is painted repose gray, along with another bedroom. The other bedroom is painted cathedral gray. Downstairs the dining room is universal gray. Thinking the living space across the foyer from the dining room would be silverpointe. Wondering what color to paint the upper hallway, stairway and the two story foyer. Do have oak trim. Foyer is north facing. Thank you for any advice.

  49. Kitchen walls are accessible beige. Interested in painting cabinets a color other than white such as a light gray or grieve. I’m considering Agreeable Gray, Anew Gray or Dorian Gray. What color would you recommend to make the kitchen light and airy and pop against the accessible beige? Currently I have wood stained cabinets.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Dee, Agreeable and Anew are almost identical, if you painted your cabinets Anew Gray it may look like you tried to match your wall color and failed. Dorian Gray is dark and would not give you the light and airy look you wanted – BUT WAIT – I have an option for you to consider. Use Dorian Gray SW 7017 on your lower cabinets and pair that with your Accessible Beige (SW 7036) on your upper cabinets. Painting your upper cabinets and walls the same color is a great trick to make your kitchen appear brighter, lighter, and bigger.

  50. I have a great room with a peaked ceiling that goes right into our kitchen. The kitchen has cherry cabinets. (Not dark cherry). We originally had shades of sage and pale green, but I having the entire area and hallway repainted in two weeks. I don’t want more green or blue or shades of pink….would china doll or accessible beige be a good choice? Also would recommend painting the ceiling the same color or stick with white as I have now. My trim is oak, but darker than honey oak.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Kathleen, well we can see why green was recommended, it really complements cherry cabinets! We understand you want a change and yes China Doll SW 7517 would look great with your cabinets. Accessible Beige does not have the warmth you need to work with the different wood tones in your space. Two other colors that would work as well are Neutral Ground SW 7568 or Canvas Tan SW 7531.

  51. Also, do you have any other suggestions for the great room/kitchen redo? With cherry cabinets in the kitchen…

  52. Recently painted our kitchen ancient marble and we love it! Dining room we used shiitake above chair rail and wallpaper below. We love the color also. Looking for complimentary colors for a small guest bathroom, entry hallway and living room. Thanks for your help!!

  53. Can agreeable gray and accesible beige be mixed together in same can? I have samples of both on my walls….agreeable gray is too gray and accesible beige is too beige. Thinking maybe a mix of both might give me the perfect “griege” color i am looking for.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Michelle, unfortunately you cannot combine two colors into one gallon of paint, the colorant load is much too high and the colorants will separate when the paint dries – leaving you with a polka dotted or smeared wall. However, we found some colors that are light greiges and may be what you are looking for. Check out:
      Skyline Steel SW 1015
      Modern Gray SW 7632

  54. Please please help!! I am struggling to find a color for my open floor plan kitchen- dining- great room. It has lots and lots of natural light, with large windows and patio doors to the west, south, and east. And skylights. The kitchen cabinets and wide trim is going to natural finished character cherry and the floor is character hickory. The ceiling is a cathedral and is painted SW pure White. The feeling I was hoping for in that room was light, happy, welcoming, cozy, earthy… I was wishing for a light neutral… But can’t seem to find it… So far since of the ones I’ve tried are Shoji, oragami white, but they looked pink… Citi loft and white eagret looked pinkish purple…pearly white (I liked pearly white but it didn’t seem to look nice with the cherry) and white duck was peachy yellow… I have a sample of oyster white up that I thought looked nice, but then heard a review that said not to use it with pink wood!! Help!! Maybe I should go darker? Like khaki shade 3455? Does aesthetic white go with those woods? I would love some advice!! (I have to get the painting done so the cabnet guy can come in two weeks, and I’m starting to feel very overwhelmed!! ) Thank you so much!!

Hello Monika, for a job of this scope and detail, you would benefit best from a one-on-one virtual consult with one of our designers. You can schedule a “real time” appointment with a designer when you sign up at SWCOLORCONSULT.COM. This virtual consult will allow the designer to see your space and lighting which would be the best option for your project.

    • Monica what color did you end up using?? I am in the same predicament?

  55. I absolutely love Shitake and have basically painted all my walls that color as it seems to go with everything. The white trim really makes the color pop. Where I’m struggling is re-doing the kitchen cabinets (open concept and living room is shitake). What color cabinets go best with shitake? Also, I would like to paint one room a different accent color just for some contrast. I really the like the blue’s with shitake. Any suggestions? The room has a lot of morning sunlight with a big picture window.
    Thanks

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Lisa, stick with a crisp, clean white like Extra White SW 7006 for your cabinets. This white does not have any undertones and will complement your Shiitake nicely. We agree with you about using a blue with Shiitake – a classic combo that will never go out of style. Take a look at Bracing Blue SW 624, Stardew SW 9138 or Faded Flaxflower SW 9146. Any of these three blues would look stunning with Shiitake SW 9173.

  56. I am planning on having the exterior trim and wood parts of my home painted in either Shitake or Loggia. My home is brick. Do either of my paint options have a pink undertone? I want to keep away from that. Thanks.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Judy, yes both of those colors have a pink undertone which would be accentuated and made more noticeable next to brick. Consider using one of these greiges (grey+beige) instead. These greiges will never turn pink and will complement the mortar work in between your bricks. Look at either Skyline Steel SW 1015 or Repose Gray SW 7015.

  57. We have a 3 bedroom condo in Florida which is generally open concept but the kitchen has a wall with a pass through rather than completely open. We would like to use Accessible Beige or Aesthetic White for the LR, DR, hallway, and foyer. However, we would like the kitchen (and possibly the accent wall) to transition to a different color. We are thinking about something like Rarified Air, Mild Blue, or Silent Ripple. The backsplash in the kitchen will be subway tile that has a combination of all those colors. Can you recommend a grayish beige and a greyish blue that would work well together? Thanks.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello John, for your main color, either Accessible Beige SW 7036 or Agreeable Gray SW 7029 would look great. Two choices for a “pop” of gray-blue would be either North Star SW 6246 or Krypton SW 6247.

  58. Hi. I am looking at Intellectual Gray & Fawn Brindle for the siding on the back of my red brick home (the brick also has some blueish /gray colors in it). I can’t really see much a difference between the two paint colors. I am using reserved white as my trim color because it doesn’t turn purple or yellow like all the other colors I sampled did. I am leaning toward Fawn Brindle, but want to make sure there is not a hidden pink or purple tone in it. I am using Urbane Bronze on my front door and shutters. Thank you for your help!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Lara, yes those two colors are very similar. They are both saturated Greiges (grey+beige) and neither Intellectual Gray nor Fawn Brindle have any pink or purple in them. Intellectual Gray SW 7045 has a beige undertone and Fawn Brindle SW 7640 has more of a gray undertone. Fawn Brindle is the better choice to complement the Urbane Bronze and other colors and textures on your exterior.

  59. This is an incredibly helpful thread! I have about 20 samples on my wall right now, mostly greiges. I was for-sure on Loggia but it’s probably too dark as a whole-house color (even though most of the common areas do have a ton of natural light). I had high hopes for Shittake, but it, too, may be too dark. Maybe I’ll try it at 75%.
I read all the great things about Accessible Beige, but it looks way too light on my walls. Worldly Gray was a contender, but it’s too gray for my liking.
I’m going back tonight to see my latest samples in changing light – probably will come down to Shittake and Bungalow Beige.

  60. I’m thinking of having my kitchen cabinets painted Loggia as this color seems to go well with my countertops (a mix of browns, grays and tans). I have dark acacia wood flooring in the living room but older ceramic tile with a pinkish taupe undertones in my kitchen area (you can see from room to room). I’m looking for a lighter paint color to repaint the entire open concept area that coordinates with Loggia and my current floor tile. Any suggestions on colors I could sample? My trim and interior doors are all white (similar to SW pure white).

      • Thank you! I will look at those suggestions. What about White Duck- do you think this color might work with my fixed furnishings? Or can it sometimes show a green undertone?

        • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello again, exactly right! White Duck can pull green which is why we left it out– may not work in your setting. Consider ordering some color at swcolorchips.com. It is always best to look at physical chip in your lighting.

  63. Help! I’m having a tough time trying to decide between Perfect Greige and Mega Greige for the exterior of my newly stucco-ed house facing SW. I’ve bought paint samples and tried painting big patches on three exterior walls but the paint colors look so different on each of the walls. I’m hoping to achieve a mid-tone exterior (not too dark) that is neutral and looks good with white trims. Do either colors have an undertone? Which would you recommend?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi May, you were smart to sample the colors – it really does let you “see” the color. Both of those are considered Greiges (grey+beige) but there are undertones to them as well. The Perfect Greige SW 6073 family has some red in it and your color may look pink in some lighting while the Mega Griege SW 7031 family has a brown undertone and will read as more of a neutral gray in most lighting.

      Sherwin-Williams
    • Like May I am trying to find an exterior color. I’m concerned about LRV… Will a paint like Shiitake or Mindful Gray end up too washed out and white looking with LRV of respectively of 51 and 48?
I want a light color but not totally washed out.
I have a large corner house with North and East front exposure. South back exposure.
      Thanks!

      • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello there! No those colors will not look washed out at all. Keep in mind that any color you paint outside will look one shade lighter, so in the case of Mindful Gray your house will look like Repose Gray SW 7015 – not white at all. LRV is used as a gauge for siding manufactures and their warranties. LRV refers to whether or not a color will absorb the sun (50 or lower) or reflect the sun (49 or higher). Most siding companies will not honor paint color with an LRV lower than 55 or 60. It is always best to look at color in your lighting.

  64. Hello! We have a colonial 2 story built in 1996 in central Iowa. The exterior is currently a very blah shade of beige with black shutters. We are going to be repainting this summer professionally and wondering if you recommend a very nice, crisp white exterior paint with no undertones. Would like to keep the trim and shutters black – does Tricorn Black work or do you recommend another color? The other option we were going with was completely different: Anonymous body, Urbane bronze trim and Tricorn Black shutters. We are leaning more toward the body being white though as we want something very classic and timeless. Please advise. Thank you so much!!!

  65. I plan on repainting the entire first floor of my home, including the ceilings. Currently the kitchen, dining room, foyer and stairway walls are Kilem Beige and the living room, I believe, is Windy Blue. The kitchen cabinets and wood floors are a warm honey color, and the doors and trim are all a true white. I’m looking for a subtle change, but need to keep the same basic color scheme because of of my kitchen flooring and countertops, which were selected to match Kilem beige. If I stay with Kilem beige, would Krypton work in the living room as I have an open floor concept and my sofa is medium grey. Also, which ceiling white works best? I saw in a previous post that you recommended Accessible Beige with Krypton. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Diane, to answer your second question first, use Ceiling Bright SW 7007 in a flat sheen for you ceiling. Now onto your first question, North Star may be too close in intensity to Kilim Beige to make the room feel different. Consider going one shade darker and a little more blue. Take a look at Krypton SW 6247 or Niebla Azul SW 9137.

  66. It would be great to see more info on the new Designer Collection since I am considering Peace of Mind for our kitchen cabinets. Will have matte black countertops with some streaks of off-white. Our Island will be medium tone stained wood. We’ll be painting all trim and doors and ceilings; also hallways and a stairwell. We have Roycroft Pewter in our foyer. Roycroft Suede in our DR. And kinda crazy, but works, Haven in our north facing LR. I have considered White Duck or Natural Choice for walls in kitchen and halls, stairway. Opinion? Thoughts on ceilings and trim? Thanks very much!

  67. Would accessible beige be a good choice for a north and west facing room that contains cherry stained cabinets and floors, some Greige carpet and ultra white trim?
    Thanks very much.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Claudia! Accessible Beige SW 7036 is a gray with a beige undertone, consider using a gray-green similar to Sea Salt SW 6204 or Comfort Gray SW 6205.

  68. What white ceiling color would compliment relaxed Khaki?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

  69. Good evening, could you help me pick an exterior color palette for my home ( Siding, trim, and door) to match my roof? When you get close to the roof, it has yellow, dark brick red, and gray in it. From the road, it looks brownish taupe. I was thinking maybe an off white like windfresh white. Does that have any colored undertones to it? Grays were too dark for my house, very confused. Would appreciate ANY feedback and would be so grateful. Thank you, Michele

  70. Hi, my family room is agreeable gray, I have a accent wall that our tv sits on. It comes forward from the rest of the wall. The fireplace mantel is white. I am looking to paint that indigo batick, dress blue, or distance? Would those be good colors with agreeable gray?
If I was to paint one room agreeable gray and the next adjoining room a slightly darker color what would be a good color? Thank you

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

  71. I have escape gray and ethereal mood in my dining room and kitchen with oak wood trim. I would like to paint my living room with a gray neutral. It is a north facing room with not a lot of light. What gray would work best in this space to compliment SW 6185 and SW 7639?

    Dawn Harper
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Dawn, take a look at Touch of Grey SW 9549 or Winter Walk SW 9628 for your room. It is always best to look at color in your lighting.

  72. In my last house we painted 7015 Repose Grey and it was a nice warm more taupe grey. So I picked it again for my next house and now it looks like soft baby blue boys room. So upset and just want it to look like it did before. How can they tint the paint to get it to a warmer soft grey?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Darcie, you may want to switch out your light bulbs before you tweak your paint. Some light bulbs have a blue undertone which can affect color, make sure you are using clear LED bulbs in your space. If the color still looks blue, take your paint back to your SW store and they can tweak if for you. Let them know what you want it to be – grayer, darker, etc

Sofas are a medium blue. I’ve been looking at Accessible Beige, Bungalow Beige, and Shiitake. Any thoughts on these colors or a better color that would compliment the kitchen cabinets ( my husband refuses to paint them) but give a updated yet timeless look. Thank you

  75. Hello,
New construction and our all our trim and doors will be Pure White, our kitchen island is Naval. Our cabinets will be prefinished in baked white color and our countertops are Hi-Macs Glacial. Debating whether to also paint all the walls in the house Pure White, or use another color. Would Touch of Grey be a good coordinating color with Pure White, and will it also look good in the Kitchen.

    Elva Murillo-Nunez
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Elva, Think twice about putting grey in the kitchen alongside Naval SW 6244 as it may turn baby blue. If you are going to stick with a light color, stick with Pure White SW 7005 any other light color may look like you tried to match your trim (Pure White) and failed.

      Sherwin-Williams
  76. That was very helpful, thank you. Would Repose Grey on the walls in theliving room adjacent to the kitchen also clash? The Island and part of the kitchen is visible through a 6 foot wide opening that sort of connects the kitchen to the living room. I prefer to paint all the common areas Pure White in different sheens for walls, doors/trim, and ceiling, but DH would like some color somewhere on those walls (entryway, kitchen, or living room) It’s a ranch house and Kitchen is on the far right, living room in the middle, Entryway is to the far left and all three areas are somewhat visible from one end to the other. The house is southern southern exposure and both, kitchen and living room have windows on south and north side. so we get a lot of natural light.

    Elva Murillo-Nunez
    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Elva, Repose Gray SW 7015 or Mindful Gray SW 7016 would both be excellent choices for your color. They are greiges and would look great with Pure White & Naval.

  79. We painted out bathroom Alabaster White. The trim we painted an Ultra White semi-gloss and it looks great! However, we would like to do something different in the bedroom. We painted a bedroom Alabaster as well. Not much light but the walls look great. We would like to paint the trim a little different than Ultra White. Can you recommend a color? Decorator White seems a little to yellow. Thanks.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello John, Ultra White is a Valspar product. We suggest you get some chips of our Extra White SW 7006 and High Reflective White SW 7757; either of these clean, crisp whites would work next to Alabaster SW 7008.

  80. Hi! Looking to paint my foyer, stairs, upstairs hall and kitchen. Upstairs hall is flanked by two bedrooms in repose gray. The foyer is flanked by a dining room in universal gray and the front room in Behr sculptor clay. The kitchen is open to the living room, also in Behr sculptor clay. The kitchen does have oak cabinets, not yellow. Does have earthtones, browns and grays in the backsplash. Open to painting all the same color. I liked cool beige. The painter said it was too dark. He suggested accessible beige. Any suggestions? My funishings are gray and blues. Do I do one color or two different? Thanks

  82. Hi! My dad’s kitchen is painted Macadamia. He would like to paint the adjoining living room a much lighter color. The living room doesn’t get much natural light. It’s an open floor plan. I was thinking Moderate White. Any recommendations? Thanks!

  83. Hello,
I am really struggling to find an interior paint color. I wanted a creamy white but my husband says it’s too white. We both agree on one thing, we like warmer colors and nothing cool or cold like gray. We have cherry cabinets stained Molasses so they are dark with the grain and cherry color coming through. We have real wood floors in a neutral color which compliment the cabinets. Parts of our home have lots of natural light and others parts do not. Ideally I am painting the entire home one color but I am not sure that is realistic because of the light variations. I like a monochromatic look so doors, walls, baseboards and ceilings one color but I would change the sheen. Other materials I have used in my house are a natural limestone for the fireplace and seat bench, Coppenhagen granite in the kitchen and a glass tile backsplash in a copper tone. Any suggestions on where to start??? I have about 12 sample colors on my walls right now and they are all a no.
    Thank you!

  84. I am looking for a neutral wall color for my open plan great room. I would like something mid-tone, and not too beige and not too gray. I prefer leaning towards the beige/tan end though, vs. the gray. I like “Shiitake”, but I am not certain if it will look good with my floors. The floors are natural birch, which is a light yellowish wood similar to maple. What do you think?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Dana here are some color suggestions from the warm greige family that lean more towards the tan/beige family than towards the gray end.
      1. Accessible Beige #SW7036
      2. Natural Tan SW 7567,
      3. Grecian Ivory SW 7541
      4. Bungalow Beige SW 7511
These colors should pair well with your flooring to help create a cohesive, coordinated palette for the space.

Hi Rob, here are color suggestions for colors from the same family that pair well with Evergreen Fog.
      Escape Gray SW 6185
      Austere Gray SW 6184
      Conservative Gray SW 6183
      Dried Thyme SW 6186

  86. We are struggling with finding a beige that will go with griege cabinets and brazilian cherry flooring. We have a connected kitchen/family room with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. I have been considering accessible or balanced beige and creamy mushroom. We are looking to add warmth to the cabinets and the room. Would you have any suggestions. Not looking too dark. Thank you

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Karen, we do not have a color by the name Creamy Mushroom. We see a color called Mushroom SW 9587. Let us know if this is what you mean. Out of the 3 colors that you are between suggest taking a closer look at Mushroom and Accessible Beige SW 7036 . These beiges are more muted in tone than Balanced Beige is and will compliment the greige cabinets. We also suggesting taking a look at Skyline Steel SW 1015 as another option to consider.

      Sherwin-Williams
      • thank you for the recommendation for my question on griege cabinets . Apologize for the mushroom, when in fact I was looking at Shitake.
If you have any other recommendations other than beige, we are certainly open. We are more concerned with adding some warmth to the room. Thank you again.

  87. Our living room – dining room (open concept) areas are a pastel sage green and the front entryway/ hallway is a muted creamy yellow. We want to paint the rooms in Evergreen Fog but need help picking a color for the entryway – thinking to stay in the yellowish family but open to suggestions.

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Rob, Evergreen Fog is a beautiful, soothing color that pairs very well with warm tones, such as creamy off-whites. A couple of coordinating colors to consider for your entryway are listed below:
      Neutral Ground SW 7568
      Antique White SW 6119
      Casa Blanca SW7 571

      Sherwin-Williams
  88. We are painting our kitchen walls shiitake and want to paint our cabinets white. Our trim color is ultra pure white and our granite countertops are tropical brown. Do you think the ultra pure white would work on the cabinets as well?

Hello Kim, yes you should definitely use the ultra-pure white on your cabinets. Cabinetry is considered part of your trim work and should be all the same color.

  89. I am painting interior walls in my new home. We loved agreeable grey and worldly grey, but both are darker than we wanted. I liked the sample of Agreeable grey cut at 50% but would like to find a color without having it ‘cut’. Do you have a recommendation of something with similar color but lighter than agreeable/worldly?

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hello Libby! The majority of our colors are arranged numerically, so to find one shade lighter, go down one number. In this case Incredible White SW 7028 is one shade lighter than Agreeable Gray SW 7029 and Shoji White SW 7042 is one shade lighter than Worldly Gray SW 7043. Let us know if you need anything else. Thank you!

  90. Is it possible for Cool Beige to look purple on interior walls? Do you have a recommendation for a similar color that will not look purple? Thank you!!

    • Sherwin-Williams logo

Hi Amy! Yes, Cool Beige SW 9086 will look purple or light mauve in most lighting as there is a fair amount of red in its undertone. Similar beiges that will never turn red or purple are:
      Pavilion Beige SW 7512
      Dhurrie Beige SW 7524

  91. We just moved in to a new home, and I’m having a difficult time choosing new paint colors. Currently the entire home , including the ceilings, are a pinkish/peachy beige color that is truly awful. Well, not as awful as the LIME GREEN bathroom, which we just painted Agreeable Gray. Whew! BUT–I’m thinking the Agreeable Gray is a little too cool, and would like a different color that is just a bit warmer. The LRV of Agreeable Gray is just right, as it has enough contrast with our white trim. I am thinking the ceilings will be SW “Pure White”. The home is mostly open concept with a range of light exposures–south, east and north. AND–we have 5 skylights. That certainly makes choosing colors difficult! What suggestions do you have for a warm, slightly gray color that is in the 62 LRV range? I’ve tried samples of: Modern Gray, Anew Gray, White Heron, Repose Gray, Mindful Gray, Accessible Beige and Worldly Gray. HELP!

  92. I am desperate to find a color to paint the entire inside of our home. We painted all of the walls Creamy (the color we had in our last house) and all of the wall look yellow. I’m looking for a “whisper of color” that leans towards tan/beige. I’m not a fan of greyish/tan colors. Please help!

Hi Janet! Take a look at Natural Choice SW 7011 or Natural Tan SW 7567 for your space. It is always best to look at color in your lighting.

  93. We are building a home in the country and love warm tones. The living, dining and kitchen are all open and have big windows facing East and west. We will have natural hickory cabinets with medium stained wood ceiling, floors and trim and doors and dark bronze windows and stone fireplace. I don’t know if a greige would look good or something else? Also, my teen is wanting his room painted Dark Night including the ceiling. It is a 12×12 room with a large window and trimmed in wood. Do people paint the entire space the same color and it look ok?

  94. Hi – we are having the exterior of our home painted in a week and I’m going in circles trying to decide on colors! Help 🙂 I picked up some of the SW exterior suggestion pamphlets but not finding what anything and I’m afraid to pick colors randomly to go together! I’m thinking a grey home, black shutters, garage doors and front door and accent color. I’ve noticed most homes that are grey have VERY white accent and I’m not sure if I like that. Am also thinking some color greige with the black and then not sure what color accent. I think i like Cityscape(grey?) and Dovetail (greige?). TY in advance for your help!

  95. My kitchen cabinets are White Duck. I’m having a tough time finding a neutral color to coordinate with the cabinets and Hanstone Aura counters. Tried Shiitake but it seems too beige. Ideas?

Hi Christine! White Duck SW 7010 has a drop of yellow in it which may be what is influencing your wall color. I don’t know if a neutral will work for what you want. We do not have a sample of the AURA countertop here but suggest you pull one of the darker colors in your countertop for your walls. If you don’t want to do that, you can use a color a little darker than White Duck such as SW 7565 Oyster Bar or SW 7569 Stucco

  96. We have a new bathroom with vanities in anew gray. Planning wall color now is little more difficult than our initial thought. Wanting to go a little lighter and maintain a comfortable clean neutral feel for the bathroom

  97. I am looking for a beige/tan for the front of my home (Exterior) East facing stucco lots of sunlight. I found 3 that I like, kilim beige, Malabar, and softer tan. Im not sure if the Kilim beige will look pink and Malabar might look too gray? I don’t want it to look grey, Pink or green but I need to find a beige/tan that looks nice for exterior. Softer tan may be ok but not sure how that will look. What are some recommended colors in that color family that would be good For a stucco home exterior? Also what colors are recommended for the trim around the windows that are also stucco. Or is it recommended to blend the trim with the body color?

  98. Do gray and greige go together? I’m looking for colors for the walls and cabinets in my small-ish utility room that has no windows. I was thinking about a lighter gray on the walls so the furnace and water heater don’t stand out, and a more saturated greige or other earth tone for the cabinets as contrast. I’m looking for colors more warmer than cooler. Can you suggest some combinations that would go well together?

  99. I’m determined to have an accent wall in SW Peppery – a nice burnt orange color. Gray seems to be the go-to for neutrals that with orange, but we already have so much gray in our house we wanted something different. We thought a nice greige might do the trick, but are having trouble finding one. So far we’ve tried City Loft and found it too pink. We tried Ancient White and thought that was too yellow. We are now on Oyster White, but I heard a color review claim that wouldn’t pair well with orange. What do you think? Is he out of his mind? Or is there another SH greige you think would compliment the Peppery Orange we are so in love with?

PS – Wouldn’t mind having gray accents with pops of blue as well.
